Seasonal Fruit Compote - digestive power + yum!

Take the fruit you have on hand and turn it into the gustatory equivalent of candy - with NO added sugar or even natural sweeteners. Whoa!

Not only will you increase your digestive fire, but you’ll enjoy the process! Simply boil the fruit with some every day, on-hand spices, and voila! You have a magical mix of healthy delish that elevates everything from oatmeal and yogurt to meat and pie that can even be eaten by the spoonful.

Compote with grapefruit, orange, cranberry, cherry, apple and nuts. Easy peasy, citrus squeezy!

One of our favorite breakfast and dessert accompaniments for winter - sweet without sugar, tangy, and spicey!

Ingredients:

  • 2—3 apples (or mix in a pear)

  • orange (or other citrus on hand)

  • 1-2 T ghee

  • 1-1.5T winter spice blend * (mix 2T ginger, 1T cinnamon, 1t ground cloves, 1t ground turmeric, 1t ground turmeric. Use liberally!)

  • 2 c seasonal berries (cranberries are great for winter)

  • 1 c water

    Instructions:

  • Dice apples/pears.

  • Slice citrus into half moons - including the rinds. Trust me.

  • Melt ghee in a saucepan over medium heat.

  • Stir in spice blend - saute, 1 minute.

  • Add apples, pear, citrus, and berries.

  • Stir to coat.

  • Wait 1-2 minutes.

  • Add a small amount of water and bring to a boil.

  • Reduce heat and simmer partially covered for 15 min.

From Laura Plumb’s Ayurvedic Cooking: “… fruit compote is easy on the system, with spices that help reset and restore.”

We use this on oatmeal, yogurt, nuts, toast, and other pastries, with beef, poultry, and pork.

Helps digestion, whether your digestion is compromised or you’re planning to eat a lot of rich foods over the holiday.

Or maybe, like us, you just enjoy it :-)
